Certified Organic Canadian Raw Honey

Certified Organic Canadian Raw Honey From Tropical Traditions

Tropical Traditions

Tropical Traditions Organic Raw Honey comes from the frontier areas of Canada, and is only harvested during a 6-week period in the summer. Tropical Traditions is the exclusive source of this premium organic honey in the U.S. Most commercial honeys available on the market today come from bee farms, where the bees are controlled within a certain area and get their pollen from usually only one kind of flower. Many of the plants that produce these flowers (clover, orange blossom, etc.) are grown with pesticides and fertilizers as well. In addition, almost all honeys on the market are pasteurized in high heat and filtered, removing many of the beneficial nutrients and enzymes.

In order for honey to be certified organic, the beehives must be placed in isolated areas miles from the dense population, industry, traffic congestion, and farm fields treated with chemicals and landfills. Second, a bee’s flying range is determined by their natural instinct which tells them to stay within their natural four mile range from the hive location. Finding area which can be certified organic is extremely difficult, which is why there are so few certified organic honeys on the market. Tropical Traditions sources its honey from hives in the wild frontier areas of Canada.

This honey is worth trying, it is thick and goes a long way and has the most wonderful intense  honey flavor you  could ever taste.  It makes such a difference in your recipes when using this product, I would highly recommend.

Inflammatory Foods

Inflammatory Foods

Diet and nutrition image.
Brickner Chiropractic

Diet and nutrition image.
Certain foods can have anti-inflammatory qualities.
Inflammation of any part of your body is your immune system’s response to an infection, injury or irritation. Localized swelling, redness and pain are the usual warning signs and symptoms of inflammation. Now we’re learning that foods we eat can contribute to a similar inflammatory response!
While we usually think of inflammation as something outside the body, inflammation inside the body may cause strokes, heart disease and a variety of other ailments. Nicholas Perricone, MD, author of a number of anti-aging books, proposes that inflammation may well be the force behind premature aging. He and other researchers believe that widespread inflammation is largely the result of our diet and may be the main factor in the rise of a number of degenerative diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, cancer, arthritis and Alzheimer’s Disease.
If your diet consists mostly of foods cooked at high temperatures (most “fast food” falls into this category) and foods that are high in sugar and hydrogenated or refined oils (chips, margarine and many processed foods), you are more likely to be experiencing inflammation.
What types of foods should you eat to combat inflammation? Dr. Perricone and others recommend:
  • Fruits, such as apples, berries, fresh pineapple, lemons, limes
  • Vegetables, such as onions, greens (spinach, broccoli, kale), garlic
  • Spices, such as cinnamon, ginger, basil, mint, parsley, rosemary
  • Nuts and seeds, such as sunflower seeds, walnuts, almonds
  • Fish, such as halibut, salmon, sardines, oysters
  • Olive oil
  • Beverages, such as green tea, black tea, red wine and lots of water!
Fortunately, we can control inflammation in our body by watching the foods we eat. Try to introduce at least one anti-inflammatory food into every meal. Many quickly notice relief from some of the symptoms that have been bothering them. Plus, as an added bonus, they’re better able to help you maintain a healthier weight!

You can Farm by Joel Salatin....Book review

You can Farm by Joel Salatin    The Entrepreneur's Guide to Start & Succeed in a Farming Enterprise

Joel Salatin writes a great book. It was very informative and an enjoyable read. It's as if he is sitting in the room with you telling you exactly what you need to do to be successful at farming on your own terms, as it should be done. I would recommend this book to anyone the slightest bit curious about how America can improve its food supply and help its rural economy. The techniques that he describes begin with respect for the land, respect for the animals, respect for the environment, and respect for the people that produce the food.Salatin also points out that we have very little, if any, knowledge about the materials we ingest many times each day. Many of us  do not know where our "food" came from or what it took to make it.

This book is filled with stories of successes and failures of many people and various farm enterprises.  The author uses holistic management fundamentals on his farm which provide a firm structure for developing healthy soil, the basis for any prosperous farm. He covers insurance, record keeping, land acquisition, and equipment.
I highly recommend this book

The dirty dozen and clean 15 of produce

The Environmental Working Group  put together two lists, “The Dirty Dozen” and “The Clean 15,” to help consumers know when they should buy organic and when it is unnecessary. These lists were compiled using data from the United States Department of Agriculture on the amount of pesticide residue found in non-organic fruits and vegetables after they had been washed. The fruits and vegetables on “The Dirty Dozen” list, when conventionally grown, tested positive for at least 47 different chemicals, with some testing positive for as many as 67. For produce on the “dirty” list, you should definitely go organic — unless you relish the idea of consuming a chemical cocktail. “The Dirty Dozen” list includes:

  • celery
  • peaches
  • strawberries
  • apples
  • domestic blueberries
  • nectarines
  • sweet bell peppers
  • spinach, kale and collard greens
  • cherries
  • potatoes
  • imported grapes
  • lettuce
All the produce on “The Clean 15” bore little to no traces of pesticides, and is safe to consume in non-organic form. This list includes:

  • onions
  • mango
  • avocados
  • sweet corn
  • pineapples
  • sweet peas
  • asparagus
  • kiwi
  • cabbage
  • eggplant
  • cantaloupe
  • watermelon
  • grapefruit
  • sweet potatoes
  • sweet onions

 What are some types
of produce more prone to sucking up pesticides than others? Richard Wiles, senior vice president of policy for the Environmental Working Group says, “If you eat something like a pineapple or sweet corn, they have a protection defense because of the outer layer of skin. Not the same for strawberries and berries.”

The Benefits of Home Canning

Canning food in your own home is a safe and rewarding process that is becoming popular again as food prices soar and people realize they need to pay attention to securing their food supplies. Preserving food with home canning is an excellent way to increase your consumption of local food. Eating locally requires eating foods when they are in season, and canning allows you to capture the bounty of any particular crop in season and extend its availability throughout the year.
Your home canned foods will be stored in jars that you can use again and again, unlike the throw-away packaging from grocery store food.

How preserving food at home helps you:

  1. Excellent quality and taste – When you use quality produce and perform the canning process correctly, you will create superior products to those for sale at the supermarket. Many recipes for home canned food are delicious and literally the quality is something that money can’t buy. You have to make these luscious foods yourself.
  2. Control over the ingredients – With home canning, you will know exactly where your food is coming from. Ideal sources of produce are your own garden and fruit trees, local organic farms, and any local farm. From any of these sources you will be able to hand select your produce at the peak of ripeness.
  3. Support of the local economy – By directly buying produce from local growers, you are putting money into the hands of local people. Local growers love selling from their own farms or market stands because they are not at the mercy of the big commodity buyers who set prices. This also allows local growers, especially small ones, to remain profitable, which is good for the local economy.
  4. Lower your carbon dioxide footprint – Great amounts of energy are used to produce and transport the food eaten by society. Highly industrialized agriculture also relies on pesticides, herbicides, and petrochemical fertilizers. All of these things are bad for the environment and degrade the ability of soils to produce food in the future, which means greater scarcity, lower quality, and higher commodity prices. When you buy local food and can it at home, you are eliminating a huge percentage of the transport costs from burned fuel associated with shipping food across continents. Yes, home canning requires an energy input, but it does not compare to food being trucked halfway across the country to stock a shelf in a store. Reducing the amount of food you eat from distant places reduces the amount of fuel you are causing to be burned. Also when buying local food, try to focus on those growers who use sustainable growing practices that do not poison the environment.
  5. Sense of accomplishment – Once you begin canning food, you will be thrilled with yourself. You will feel like you did something very meaningful to your existence because you did!

I  use there products often in baking.  I was excited to get this  book, I collect  cookbooks and  thought that this one would be great, but I had no idea how great this book was.

I am a firm believer that God had made  things in the natural for healing, but it is up to us to seek God and have him lead  us to it.

In the back of this book are over 85 wonder recipes , using Coconut oil, and wow  such a variety from desserts to  sauces to casseroles to drinks and Gluten Free.   Good stuff.   All using some form of coconut: Virgin Coconut Oil, Coconut Cream Concentrate, or Coconut Flour.

* These foundational recipes concentrate on sauces, spreads, and vinaigrettes.
* Developed by a professional chef.
* You can easily add Virgin Coconut Oil into your diet.

Natural Ways to Prevent and Treat Bug Bites

MotherEarthNews.com                                                                                                                                           It's hard to resist the lure of the outdoors during these summer months. But whether it's a chore, a meal or a simple frolic that beckons you into the open air, you're likely to be stung, feasted on or just irritated by bugs.  Prevention Rather than reaching for manufactured insect repellents that use powerful chemicals to keep bugs at bay, try these tips to naturally prevent bug bites. Wearlight-colored, loose-fitting clothing when outside. You'll lower your chances of popping up on a mosquito's radar, as these bugs are attracted to dark colors and easily bite through tight clothing. Also avoid wearing bright or floral patterns, as resembling a scrumptious flower can make you attractive to bees and wasps. Even if you don't have a pool or pond, you still need to eliminate standing water around your home, which is an invitation for mosquitoes to lay eggs near your abode. Drill holes in the bottoms of things like trash bins to drain water that may collect in them. Change birdbaths and pets' water dishes at least once a week and as often as possible in the summertime to wipe out any breeding grounds mosquitoes may have created. Check for other standing water sources, such as gutters, flower pots and children's toys. Rosemary, basil, catnip, lemon balm and rose geraniums are a few of the plants you can grow that have insect-repelling qualities. Lemon balm and catnip are especially good for warding off mosquitoes: Researchers at Iowa State University found the essential oil in catnip to be about 10 times more effective at repelling mosquitoes than DEET, the widely used synthetic repellent. Simply crush the leaves of any of these plants to release their scents and rub them on your exposed skin. Make your own catch-all insect repellent from a concoction of essential oils: 2  teaspoons total of any of the following essential oils: basil, cedarwood, citronella, juniper, lemon, myrrh, pine, rose geranium or rosemary (available at health food stores) 1 cup 190-proof grain alcohol (available at liquor stores) Place ingredients in a jar with a tight-fitting lid and shake vigorously. Transfer to a small bottle for storage. To use, rub a small amount on exposed skin, though test first to make sure skin doesn't react negatively.  Turns out garlic wards off more than vampires. You can make a potent mosquito repellent by mixing one part garlic juice with five parts water in a small spray bottle. Shake and spray a light coating of the mixture on exposed skin. Treatment If you are bitten or stung, try the following natural healing remedies.  Plantain, a common weed in yards and parks, can zap out pain, heat and swelling when its leaves are chewed and applied to a bite. Identify plantain by the five parallel veins that run the length of each leaf.  Rub aloe vera leaves on stings or bites to relieve burning sensations. Ease itch by applying a few drops of lavender oil as needed.????????

Shea Butter review

http://www.cleopatraschoice.com/shea-butter.html

I was sent this product  from Cleopatra`s Choice to try and review. My teenage daughter who has naturally dry skin has not had much  luck with moisturizers absolutely loves this product.  It has worked well for  her and I love it too!  I apply it to my face & body in the morning . It is best to work with small amounts of this product.
The butter is very thick, you can use a hairdryer on a low setting for less than 30 seconds until the butter is slightly melted on top or scoop the butter out with a spoon or such, put a small amount into your hands  rubbing them  together, the heat of your hands turns this product into a smooth non greasy face & body butter. It makes your skin feel so soft. The butter has a nutty scent that fades quickly
Pure, unrefined Shea Butter has been prized for thousands of years for its hydrating and healing properties. Originating from the tropics of Africa, it is an excellent source of Vitamins A, E and F. Naturally highly concentrated, Shea Butter is the natural and economic choice to replenish your dry, damaged skin and make it feel softer and healthier than it has in years.

Easily absorbed; this butter is great for people of all skin types including those with skin sensitivities. Even mild enough for the delicate skin of a baby, its restorative properties promote skin elasticity which makes it the perfect solution for minimizing scars and stretch marks.

The high vitamin A and E content of makes it an excellent ointment for sun-damaged or wrinkled skin. Shea Butter moisturizes skin while preventing premature wrinkles and eases your fine lines without clogging pores or leaving your skin greasy or shiny.

The Vitamin F works to protect and rejuvenate your rough, dry chapped skin. Not only good for the skin, it is also be used as a pomade to restore the luster and shine to dry, damaged and dull hair. The butter even has a place in the first aid kit; its antiseptic properties make it the natural choice for treating burns and minor skin abrasions.

We do not process our Shea Butter. It is 100% pure and unrefined; this ensures that the butter maintains its rich emollient properties and that its healing benefits are left intact. Many consumer grades have been chemically processed and deprived of its naturally healing benefits and moisturizing properties. The resulting product is devoid of the emollient characteristics it is known for.

Made in small batches, this butter is a fair trade item produced by female West African subsistence farmers in Ghana. The production facility is a safe and clean working environment that enables the locals to earn a fair wage that supplements their farming income.

I decided to try Dead Sea Salts after seeing your web site and reading reviews. I'm amazed at the difference soaking in a tub of warm water and Dead Sea Salts makes.

I ordered the 5 lb. bag of  Dead Sea Salts unscented. After soaking my skin was so soft.
The salt is 100% Dead Sea Salt, imported from Israel.  The use of sea water has been around since Biblical times.
What are the benefits of Adovia Dead Sea Salt?
There are many benefits to bathing in baths with Dead Sea salts. Some of these benefits have been documented through clinical research while others have been reported to us from customers using the salts:
Bathing in mineral rich bath salts from the Dead Sea:
  1. Helps to soften and deeply moisturize dry, flaky skin.
  2. Helps to relieve certain symptoms of Psoriasis
  3. They are rich with over 21 minerals which are essential for proper skin function and cell to cell communication between the skin cells.
  4. High concentration of Magnesium helps to reduce muscle and joint aches.
  5. Replenishes minerals which are essential for skin health, and which can be depleted during our daily lives.
  6. Deeply hydrates skin and provides the minerals needed to maintain a natural moisture balance
  7. Helps reduce redness and irritation caused by various skin conditions.
  8. Helps to relieve certain Rheumatologic Conditions - the minerals are absorbed into the blood stream helping to stimulate circulation.
(Harari, M. and Shani, J. (1997), Demographic evaluation of successful antipsoriatic climatotherapy at the Dead Sea (Israel) DMZ Clinic. International Journal of Dermatology, 36: 304–308. doi: 10.1046/j.1365-4362.1997.00204.x)
  9. Research into bathing with Dead Sea salt has shown to help reduce the appearance of wrinkles (this is mostly with facial product with Dead Sea minerals)
Ehrhardt, Proksch; Nissen, HP; Bremgartner, M; Urquhart, C. "Bathing in a magnesium-rich Dead Sea salt solution: follow-on review". International journal of dermatology 46 (2): 177–179
  10. It's a deeply relaxing way to take off some stress after a long day at work and get into "sleep-mood"
What are the minerals in Dead Sea salt and what do they do?
There is a reason why salt from the Dead Sea is much more expensive than regular sea salt from any other sea or ocean in the world. The reason is the very high concentration of mineral present in the salt. While regular sea salt is about 90% Sodium (which accounts for it's salty taste), salt extracted from the waters of the Dead Sea is only about 10% Sodium with the other 90% accounting for other minerals which are essential for proper skin function, but which are present in very small quantities in regular sea salt. So what are these minerals exactly and what do they do? Many of the twenty one minerals are present in trace form, however the six minerals listed below are prevent in much larger concentration. Below we go over what each mineral's general biological function is:
Magnesium Chloride: Stimulates protein synthesis. This allows for quicker natural regeneration of healthy skin tissue. Essential for skin cell metabolism, this also provides some anti-allergic and anti-inflamatory benefits. Also vital in helping the cells process other nutrients and vitamins.
Potassium Chloride: Assists the cells in expelling waste and toxins. Potassium is also a major factor in regulating muscle function and the nervous system. Allows the skin to properly maintain an optimal moisture balance to reduce over drying or overoilyness. Signs of potassium deficiency include abnormally dry, patchy skin as well as the the opposite extreme - oily skin and acne.
Sulfur: Sulfur is an essential mineral for enabling cells to breathe oxygen as well as convert toxins into non toxic particles. The presence of sulfur is vital to the synthesis of collagen - an important compound for skin health.
Sodium Chloride: Sodium plays a detoxifying role, allowing cells to expel toxins by converting them into waste. Also essential for the absorption of other nutrients.
Bromide: Has natural anti-biotic properties and helps with the rebuilding of cell in the body.
Zinc: Facilitates skin renewal and stimulates collagen and elastin synthesis. Has some anti-inflamatory and natural uv ray blocker properties.
Calcium: Plays an important roll in cell protection as well as cell membrane permeability, thereby allowing for better absorption of nutrients.
More about the Dead Sea:
Located in between Israel and Jordan, and split almost evenly between the two neighboring countries, The Dead Sea is considered one of nature's miracles. It was formed around 3 million years ago and has been a legendary body of water since ancient times. In fact Aristotle, the great Greek philosopher and historian wrote about the sea and the famous Egyptian Queen Cleopatra had cosmetics factories built on the shores of the magical sea to harness it's salt, mud and minerals in the production of soap and  much the same as is done today. The sea is mentioned many times in the Old and New Testaments of the Bible and most major religious texts.

http://www.cleopatraschoice.com/dead-sea-salt.html
The Dead Sea, located at the lowest point on Earth, is one of the saltiest bodies of water in the world. Compared to regular sea or ocean salt which contains only about 3% salt vs water, the Dead Sea contains 33% mineral salt. In fact this level of salinity creates one of the most amazing effects that visitors marvel at when they make a trip to the sea - a person swimming in the sea can not sink! Yes, when you go into the waters of the sea, you actually float as if you were on an air mattress, but naturally. Today many people who are seeking treatment for skin conditions such as Psoriasis, Eczema and other diseases take a medical tourism trip to the sea and get relief from soaking in the mineral salts waters of the sea as well as lathering themselves with Dead Sea mud.

Coconut oil and pet health

Many people don’t know about natural remedies to help their animals survive different health problems.
Adding coconut oil to your pet's diet is one of the healthiest things you can do for your pet.

Summer can be a season when it’s likely your pet will contract something and there are also more problems with fleas. I would recommend  feeding your animals a small teaspoon of coconut oil at least once or twice a day, especially in the summer months or if they have come down with something that can’t be treated.

Skin and Coat

  • Coconut oil can be very beneficial for  pets when taken internally. Adding the oil to their food is the simplest way to include it in their diet. Just a few drops a day can be very beneficial to the coat, moisturizing the skin and hair. Coconut oil can be used in its semi-solid form or warmed slightly to make it liquid. For dogs and cats, add 1/4 teaspoon of oil for every 10 pounds they weigh. Slowly increase to 1 teaspoon for every 10 pounds of weight per day, or 1 Tablespoon for every 30 pounds. Increase the dosage slowly, and if you notice any irregular bowel movements or an upset stomach, decrease the amount you're giving them. Allow your pets time to adjust to smaller amounts before attempting to increase it again.

Healing Properties

  • Externally, coconut oil can be applied to cracked paw pads, wounds, scratches and cuts, like a healing salve. It can be used inside the mouth on sores and on teeth as a toothpaste. Coconut oil may also be applied to fungal infections, bites and stings--skin ailments of almost any kind.

In the Ears

  • Slightly warmed coconut oil may be dropped inside your pets ears to treat ear mites and infected ears. If using a cotton swab, be careful not to place the swab very far into the ear--use it only to apply the oil to the outside of the ear canal, where it can get into the ear on its own.

Skin Irritations

  • Coconut oil may get rid of odors on your pet's coat and help cats to eliminate fur balls. It can also benefit pets with difficult skin conditions such as eczema, allergy to fleas or other allergies.

Soy/ Edamame Can Cause Allergic Reactions for Years

This 'Beloved' Food Can Cause Allergic Reactions for Years - and Infertility for Generations!

Posted By Dr. Mercola | March 14 2011
soy beansSoy can be found in almost every product on your grocery store shelves -- corn chips, ice cream, canned tuna and every packaged food you can think of. It goes under names like yeast extract, soy protein, soybean oil, soy lecithin and soy flour.
But soy is one of the top eight allergens that cause immediate reactions such as coughing, sneezing, runny nose, hives, diarrhea, difficulty swallowing and anaphylactic shock.
Delayed allergic responses can also occur several hours to several days after the food is eaten.
According to Mannie Barling and Ashley F. Brooks-Simon on the Blogger News Network:
"To make soy more appetizing, the manufacturers added sugar, synthetic sweeteners, genetically modified high fructose corn sugar, refined salt, artificial flavorings, colors and MSG. So the soy isn't really soy. It is a Frankenfood created for the sole purpose of making a profit from health conscious people trying to live a healthier life."

Sources:

Dr. Mercola's Comments:

The fact that unfermented soy is widely regarded as a health food in the United States is a perfect example of how a brilliant marketing strategy can fool millions.
It all started when the food industry, presented with a quandary over what to do with the byproducts of their ever-growing soybean oil industry, had an idea.
With some processing, and some added flavorings, preservatives, sweeteners, emulsifiers and synthetic nutrients, they turned soy protein isolate (the key ingredient in most soy foods that imitate meat and dairy products), "the food processors' ugly duckling," as Sally Fallon put it, "into a New Age Cinderella."

How Did Soy Become so Popular?

Years ago, tropical oils, such as palm and coconut oil, were commonly used in American food production. Spurred by financial incentives, the industry devised a plan to shift the market from these "exotic" tropical oils to something more "homegrown." As a result, a movement was created to demonize and vilify tropical oils in order to replace them with domestically grown oils such as corn and, primarily, soy.
For the most part, they've been very successful in their campaign to paint soy in a healthy light, and this belief was further propagated by the FDA's 1999 approval of this health claim for soy foods:
"Diets low in saturated fat and cholesterol that include 25 grams of soy protein a day may reduce the risk of heart disease."
Unfortunately, according to the survey Consumer Attitudes About Nutrition 2008 (by the United Soybean Board):
  • As of 2007, 85 percent of consumers perceive soy products as healthful
  • 33 percent of Americans eat soy foods or beverages at least once a month
  • 70 percent of consumers believe soybean oil is good for them
  • 84 percent of consumers agree with the FDA's claim that consuming 25 grams of soy protein daily reduces your risk of heart disease
Soy's glowing healthy image is not based on science, however, but rather shrewd marketing and outright lies that have taken root among the masses. The end result is enormous profits for the soy industry and impaired health for most who have been deceived into using unfermented soy long-term.

What You Need to Know About Unfermented Soy

First and foremost, unfermented soy -- the type found in soymilk, soy burgers, soy ice cream and even tofu -- is not a health food.
If you were to carefully review the thousands of studies published on soy, I strongly believe you would reach the same conclusion as I have -- which is, the risks of consuming unfermented soy products FAR outweigh any possible benefits.
Dr. Kaayla Daniel, author of The Whole Soy Story, points out thousands of studies linking soy to malnutrition, digestive distress, immune-system breakdown, thyroid dysfunction, cognitive decline, reproductive disorders and infertility -- even cancer and heart disease.
Here is just a sampling of the health effects that have been linked to soy consumption:
  • Breast cancer
  • Brain damage
  • Infant abnormalities
  • Thyroid disorders
  • Kidney stones
  • Immune system impairment
  • Severe, potentially fatal food allergies
  • Impaired fertility
  • Danger during pregnancy and nursing

8 Top Reasons to Avoid Unfermented Soy

If you're eating soy because you believe it is healthy, please do yourself and your family a favor and click on some of the links above as well as read through the list that follows. You'll quickly see that soy, in its processed form, is not a food you want in your body.
  • 91 percent of soy grown in the US is genetically modified (GM)

The genetic modification is done to impart resistance to the toxic herbicide Roundup. While this is meant to increase farming efficiency and provide you with less expensive soy, the downside is that your soy is loaded with this toxic pesticide. The plants also contain genes from bacteria that produce a protein that has never been part of the human food supply.
  • GM soy has been linked to an increase in allergies. Disturbingly, the only published human feeding study on GM foods ever conducted verified that the gene inserted into GM soy transfers into the DNA of our gut bacteria and continues to function. This means that years after you stop eating GM soy, you may still have a potentially allergenic protein continuously being produced in your intestines.

Even more frightening is the potential for GM soy to cause infertility in future generations, which has been evidenced by recent Russian research.
  • Soy contains natural toxins known as “anti-nutrients”

Soy foods contain anti-nutritional factors such as saponins, soyatoxin, phytates, protease inhibitors, oxalates, goitrogens and estrogens. Some of these factors interfere with the enzymes you need to digest protein. While a small amount of anti-nutrients would not likely cause a problem, the amount of soy that many Americans are now eating is extremely high.
  • Soy contains hemagglutinin

Hemagglutinin is a clot-promoting substance that causes your red blood cells to clump together. These clumped cells are unable to properly absorb and distribute oxygen to your tissues.
  • Soy contains goitrogens

Goitrogens are substances that block the synthesis of thyroid hormones and interfere with iodine metabolism, thereby interfering with your thyroid function.
  • Soy contains phytates

Phytates (phytic acid) bind to metal ions, preventing the absorption of certain minerals, including calcium, magnesium, iron, and zinc -- all of which are co-factors for optimal biochemistry in your body. This is particularly problematic for vegetarians, because eating meat reduces the mineral-blocking effects of these phytates (so it is helpful -- if you do eat soy -- to also eat meat).
  • Soy is loaded with the isoflavones genistein and daidzein

Isoflavones are a type of phytoestrogen, which is a plant compound resembling human estrogen. These compounds mimic and sometimes block the hormone estrogen, and have been found to have adverse effects on various human tissues. Soy phytoestrogens are known to disrupt endocrine function, may cause infertility, and may promote breast cancer in women.
Drinking even two glasses of soy milk daily for one month provides enough of these compounds to alter your menstrual cycle. Although the FDA regulates estrogen-containing products, no warnings exist on soy.
  • Soy has toxic levels of aluminum and manganese

Soybeans are processed (by acid washing) in aluminum tanks, which can leach high levels of aluminum into the final soy product. Soy formula has up to 80 times higher manganese than is found in human breast milk.
  • Soy infant formula puts your baby’s health at risk

Nearly 20 percent of U.S. infants are now fed soy formula, but the estrogens in soy can irreversibly harm your baby’s sexual development and reproductive health. Infants fed soy formula take in an estimated five birth control pills’ worth of estrogen every day.
Infants fed soy formula have up to 20,000 times the amount of estrogen in circulation as those fed other formulas!
The best way to eliminate non-fermented soy from your diet is to avoid all processed foods and instead purchase whole foods that you prepare yourself. If you do buy packaged foods, you can check the label to see if it contains soy.
You can also keep this list of soy foods to AVOID handy:
  • Tofu
  • TVP (texturized vegetable protein) or soy protein isolate
  • Soybean oil
  • Soymilk
  • Soy cheese, soy ice cream, soy yogurt
  • Soy "meat" (meatless products made of TVP)
  • Soy protein
  • Edamame
  • Soy infant formula

Is There a Healthy Way to Eat Soy?

Yes, and that's by choosing fermented soy.
After a long fermentation process, the phytate (which blocks your body's uptake of essential minerals) and anti-nutrient levels of soybeans are reduced, and their beneficial properties become available to your digestive system.
Traditionally fermented soy is the form that has been very popular in many Asian cultures for centuries, and numerous studies suggest it aids in preventing and reducing a variety of diseases including certain forms of heart disease and cancers.
One of the main benefits of fermented soy, especially natto, is that it is the best food source of vitamin K2. Vitamin K2 is essential to preventing osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease, and diseases of the brain such as dementia, and protecting you from various cancers including prostate, lung, liver cancer and leukemia.
For these reasons, I strongly recommend adding fermented soy to your diet, in varieties such as the following:
  • Tempeh a fermented soybean cake with a firm texture and nutty, mushroom-like flavor.
  • Miso, a fermented soybean paste with a salty, buttery texture (commonly used in miso soup).
  • Natto, fermented soybeans with a sticky texture and strong, cheese-like flavor.
  • Soy sauce, which is traditionally made by fermenting soybeans, salt and enzymes; be wary because many varieties on the market today are made artificially using a chemical process.
These are the soy varieties that will actually support and nourish your health -- unlike the vast majority of processed soy products on the market, which will do nothing but detract from it.

5 natural moisturizers

When you think of adding some moisture to your skin, think about ingredients derived directly from nature that nourish and rejuvenate the skin. You may already have some of these ingredients already in your kitchen cupboard. Some of the most popular natural moisturizers include olive oil, coconut oil and shea butter.

Olive Oil

Olive Oil for Best Face Moisturizer
This is one of the very basic natural skin moisturizers that continues to be popular because it adds moisture to the skin and promotes a healthy glow.  If you prefer your oil scented, you can add some essential oils to add a calming or uplifting scent. Olive oil is also high in antioxidant content, which will help repair damaged skin and protect it from free radical damage.

Coconut Oil

Coconut Oil for Best Face Moisturizer
Coconut oil is one of the very best natural moisturizers because it works wonders on rough and damaged skin. Because coconut oil contains antioxidants, it helps the skin heal itself and repair any damage. Using coconut oil on a regular basis as your primary body moisturizer may also lessen the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. Coconut oil also assists the skin in its natural renewal process, assisting with the shedding of dead skin cells and promoting healthy skin. It's best to apply coconut oil after you have showered.

Shea Butter

Shea Butter for Best Face Moisturizer
Shea butter is considered to be a very good natural moisturizer because it is readily and easily absorbed into the skin. Once you apply shea butter, it continues to work throughout the day and opens your pores to allow you to continue to absorb moisture from the air. Shea butter also improves the elasticity of the skin.

Cocoa Butter

Cocoa butter for Best Face Moisturizer
Cocoa butter is the sweet smelling "fat" that is extracted from cocoa seeds. It is considered as being one of the best moisturizers because it is readily absorbed into the skin. When you apply cocoa butter to your skin, it creates a layer of protection that protects your skin from outside influences (dry air, etc). Cocoa butter is also recommended as a body moisturizer for those with eczema or dermatitis.

Vitamin E Oil

Vitamin E Oil for Best Face Moisturizer
This happens to be one of the best natural treatments when it comes to minimizing wrinkles, fine lines and even age spots. Vitamin E is high in antioxidants, so it protects the skin of free radical damage. Applying this oil to the skin will moisturizer it to some degree, but it's best to use this in addition to another oil.

When you use a natural moisturizer, you can be sure that your skin is truly getting the best care without any harmful preservatives that can be found in other lotion products. These options are also sustainable moisturizers because they contain no ingredients that would negatively impact the environment. People with sensitive skin will also benefit from using these organic moisturizers. Remember to choose a moisturizer that appeals to you so that you will look forward to applying it daily to protect and nourish your skin.

A Mess-Free Way to Eat POMEGRANATE guaranteed

suzy@suzyeats.com
pomegranate is a fruit that you should try to eat each week. It may also be a fruit that many have not yet tried. You can find pomegranate at your local grocery store. You may also find the seeds in a container or the juice. But, as I mentioned previously, the seeds are more nutritious than the juice.
The pomegranate seeds are loaded with antioxidants, vitamin C, fiber and potassium. They are great for vomiting or diarrhea to help replenish potassium. You can eat the seeds directly or add them to different meals such as hummus or salads. Another key aspect is that they are low in calories.
One complaint about pomegranate is that it is quite messy to eat. Below I have listed below a four step process to make it mess-free.
Step 1: Cut of the crown of the pomegranate, and cut it into sections where the skin is thick to minimize damage to the seeds.
Step 2: Place pomegranate in a bowl of cold water. Submerge the pomegranate in the water and gently pry it open into sections to pull the seeds out. (the seeds will sink to the bottom and the skin will go to the top of the water).
Step 3: Throw away any extra pieces of skin and skim off anything extra. Leave only the seeds in the water.
Step 4: Take seeds out of the water and place onto a paper towel to dry. You can refrigerate the seeds for 3-5 days in an airtight container and they will remain fresh.
ENJOY you low calorie, highly nutritious snack!!!
Do you have another method to eat a pomegranate??? Let us know.
Is this your first time or are you an experienced pomegranate eater ?? :-) Let us know
